EPA/VOA
Specialty Silicone Products (SSP) supplies EPA/VOA septa with or without caps that are either fitted or bonded. Our very clean silicone septa meets a requirement from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for low siloxane bleed. If siloxanes contaminate a sample during gas chromatography (GC) or liquid chromatography, the chromatogram may contain ghost peaks that interfere with analysis.
To avoid septum bleed, SSP uses platinum-cured silicones. In this way, our septa supports the accuracy of volatile organic analysis (VOA), a series of laboratory techniques for identifying and measuring volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which have adverse effects upon human health. During soil and water testing, it’s important to avoid septa that can introduce contaminants such as siloxanes, fluorinated compounds, acetones, and various solvents. Otherwise, the septa may introduce the very contaminants for which VOA is searching.
SSP supplies three main types of standard EPA/VOA products: stand-alone septa, septa that’s fitted to caps, and septa that’s bonded to caps. Stand-alone septa is not fitted or bonded to caps for EPA/VOA vials. Septa that’s fitted to caps is assembled, but not bonded. Finally, bonded caps and septa use a proprietary process to bond the cap cleanly and without affecting the septa’s low-bleed properties.
