Liquid Chromatography Septa

Liquid chromatography septa (LC septa) are often different from those used in gas chromatography (GC) due to the different operating conditions and requirements of each technique.

The most common difference is material composition, especially regarding the ability to withstand high temperatures in GC analysis.

In liquid chromatography, LC made with a PTFE/silicone combination are often preferred because of their resealing capabilities and purity. 

Materials 

  • GC: Typically use silicone rubber septa which can withstand high temperatures needed for vaporizing samples. 
  • LC: Often use PTFE/silicone septa which prioritize purity and resealing ability at lower temperatures. 

Considerations

  • Injection pressure: GC often operates at higher pressures, which can impact septum selection. 
  • Sample type: The type of sample being analyzed can also influence the septum choice. 

What is Septa Bleed?

If a septum decomposes under these conditions, a condition known as bleed can cause baseline disruption and ghost peaks in the chromatogram.

Silicone Septa: Ultra Pure

Liquid chromatography septa from SSP are formulated and manufactured using ultra pure silicone elastomers and then conditioned for:

  • Ultra Low Bleed
  • High Temperature Resistance (240C)
  • Long Lasting (multiple injections)
  • Resist Coring
